On 23 November 2007, Ingeniøren [The Engineer Magazine] published an article about a new calculation program to be developed for Ramboll by Industrial Ph.D. Kasper Paaske Larsen. During the next 3 years Ramboll will invest 1 million DKK in the development of this calculation program. The program features include minimising material usage in new high rise buildings and bridges, thereby preventing unnecessary demolitions and reparations.
Commercialisation of an old theory The 26 year old Kasper Paaske Larsen will develop a program that calculates concrete structures' bearing capacity using the plasticity theory. "Researchers have been very focused on the theory's academic aspects; they have concluded with certainty that something is possible in theory, but nobody has developed software that utilises the theory's potential in practice," Kasper Paaske Larsen says. "One of the goals is to develop a program easy to use so that all engineers at Ramboll can use it. My task now is to use the theory to develop a commercial program that can be used for new construction projects as well as calculating the bearing capacity of existing concrete structures," Kasper Paaske Larsen explains. "Those with the best machines win" Ramboll believes that in the future good calculation software will be a determining factor in choosing which consultant is awarded contracts. Therefore Ramboll is now investing in the development of unique software. With this software, it will be possible to avoid overdimensioning and to construct reinforcement designs that are better and less expensive for contractors, thereby saving materials, time and money for owners. *Bent Feddersen (Chief, Expertise Development) from Ramboll and Peter Doe Poulsen from DTU (Technical University of Denmark) will assist Kasper Paaske Larsen during the project. |
