Ramboll has just had an article published in the HVAC magazine describing the success with the application of Ramboll’s 3D models during the construction of SEB’s new head office in Copenhagen.

3D modelling is becoming increasingly popular
At the site, Ramboll makes a 3D model of the project available to contractors during construction, and via the viewer NavisWorks, everybody - from the individual workman to the construction management team - can access the 3D model and become familiar with the location and erection of installations and constructions.

In the picture you can see the blacksmith welding pipes in the chiller plant. He has brought a laptop with him to the chiller plant to get a good understanding of the complex piping and thus ensure correct construction. Welding is carried out from the 3D model only and no additional work drawings are prepared.

Advantages for all parties involved
In the experience of the Ramboll project team, it makes a decisive difference during the construction phase that the contractors can now see beyond the standard 2D plans with direct access to our 3D models; it reduces the number of errors, improves communication and reduces the number of questions from the building site significantly. The contractors are also inspired by the opportunities obtained from the 3D model. By way of example, they emphasize how easy it is for new people at the site to acquaint themselves with the project, and that it is easier for them to make an estimate of the consumption of materials and to control the logistics at the site.

Make demands in the tender documents
Experiences so far have shown that it is extremely important to make requirements in the tender document for the contractors to use the 3D models actively and supply sectional views, etc., themselves. Requirements are also to be made for the contractors to prepare work drawings in 3D so as to be able to update the 3D model during the entire construction phase. Thus we can also ensure that each contractor requires the licenses necessary for the viewers, and that they are referred to the 3D model for answers to any questions. In this way, we contribute to development and improve efficiency during construction.

Exciting opportunities
The 3D models make for new opportunities, improved communication between contractors, manufacturers, partners, clients, etc., and it is imperative that this is emphasized at each project. Ramboll has a number of simple, free viewers at their disposal, in addition to several advanced programs to communicate the contents of even quite large 3D models.
